Paella Party this Saturday at Hall’s Choice Farm in support of land preservation and clean water!

Have you heard about “CHAPS?”

CHAPS is the Community Historic Agricultural Preserve and Sanctuary. It’s a project based in New Market, Maryland, where massive sprawling development is slated for 2018. This controversial development will impact and destroy the lower Linganore Watershed, which provides a powerful filter for our local drinking water.

In fact, 42% of the water supply for Frederick City in Maryland comes from this lake. Besides this, locals will be impacted by overcrowded schools, more congested and more dangerous roads, and increased flooding from the pavement that prevents a reabsorption by the aquifer below. Everyone is affected, but we’re still working to stop it, and you can help.

CHAPS aims to protect the farmland around the watershed by creating a non-profit that will turn the surrounding land into a community asset. Where a sprawling suburban development is planned in this vulnerable watershed, there could be protect woodlands, field and streams, with walking trails, a bird and wildlife sanctuary, and beneficial hunting opportunities. Other ideas have been suggested, such as equine, dog, and agricultural therapy for war veterans and/or other challenged populations.
