Bring A Broom…and help tidy downtown Frederick for spring!

Please join us for the third annual Bring A Broom Saturday on Saturday, April 26, 2014, when community members tidy downtown Frederick for spring.

We are thrilled the Downtown Frederick Partnership agreed to extend the clean-up to include Church, Second and Market Streets this year (from their insections with Bentz to insections with East), and the City also agreed to donate the mulch for tree wells on these streets if we had the volunteers to do it.

Please note that this is a pilot for extending the program! Let’s show we can do this so the area that is cleaned up can continue to be extended! It’s only two and a half hours, and it starts with a FREE breakfast, and ends with a FREE pizza party at Brewer’s Alley!

Individuals can also form a group of six (including a block captain) and ‘claim a block’ so they can volunteer together and, if they live or work or worship downtown, they can claim a particular block if it is not yet taken. Block Captains are still needed for some blocks, all that is required is for them to attend brief planning meeting on Thursday, April 24 at Downtown Frederick Partnership and collect supplies for volunteers (trash bags, disposable gloves etc.)

Downtown Frederick Partnership and NAC 11 joined forces to create this event. Downtown residents, Kirsten Tydings and Hallie Burrier, are serving as event co-chairs. Hallie is also a downtown merchant and has increased the participation of other merchants to clean up on Market and Patrick Streets.

Comcast, Brewer’s Alley, Olde Towne Historic Landscape, Petals and Pots, and Wegmans are event sponsors. The City of Frederick is providing in-kind support to the effort as well. The Comcast Foundation is helping to support the efforts of this event and has agreed to follow up with additional funding based on the number of volunteers, so spread the word and help the Comcast Foundation help our community!

Bring a broom, a water bottle, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a visor and your friends and neighbors to help Downtown Frederick freshen up! Volunteers will sweep, mulch, clean up and plant flowers. All ages are welcome.

Q&A (details)

Who do I contact if I need more information about the event?

Please reach out to Kara Norman, Partnership Executive Director, at kara@downtownfrederick.org or 301-698-8118.

Is there an age limit to participate?

All ages are welcome. For kids younger than 16, we ask that parents be on hand to help guide their children’s work. For older teens, they are welcome to work with or without their parents. All volunteers are asked to follow the direction of the on site block captain. The block captain was recruited to serve as a resource to the Bring A Broom volunteers and guide the work in each block.

What about bad weather?

In case of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, April 27 from 8:30 to 11AM. Some event aspects may be canceled if rescheduling is required due to weather.

Do I need to print a ticket?

You do not need to print a ticket or bring a ticket with you to the event. Simply register online. The event organizers will check you in between 8:30 and 9:00AM on Saturday, April 26 at the Downtown Frederick Partnership office located at 19 E Church Street.

Do I need to register in advance? Can I sign up the day of the event?

While we would prefer to have everyone register in advance, you are welcome to join us on Saturday without pre-registering. Advance registration assists us in planning for an effective event with ample snacks and supplies.

Where do I park?

You are welcome to park in any of the city parking garages. The Church Street Public Parking Garage (17 E Church St) is located directly adjacent to the Downtown Frederick Partnership office. For more information, see the Partnership’s website.

What areas of Downtown Frederick are being sweeped?

Volunteers will help sweep East Patrick Street between Bentz and East Streets and Market Street between South and Seventh Streets. New this year, the sweep area will expand to include the residential blocks on Church, Second and Third Streets between Maxwell Alley and Court Street. This pilot effort will help the organizers assess if we can continue to grow the clean up area in future years.

What happens after the event to keep Downtown Frederick clean?

Downtown Frederick Partnership is pleased to be a supporter of the Frederick Community Action Agency’s Green Team. The Green Team is a unique effort to provide employment to people who are or have been homeless, with a special focus on homeless veterans. The Green Team completes a variety of efforts in Downtown Frederick including general clean up as well as power washing the sidewalks. The Bring A Broom Saturday event is timed to provide a kick off to the Green Team’s spring and summer clean up efforts in Downtown Frederick. This crew will work throughout the warm weather months to improve the cleanliness of Downtown Frederick. Bring A Broom Saturday provides a head start as they begin their work in the new season.
