Frederick Community Action Agency Annual Report and Year-End Fundraising Effort

The Frederick Community Action Agency (FCAA) is pleased to release a copy of its Annual Report for fiscal year 2014. Furthermore, the FCAA, under the auspices of its non-profit sponsor, Friends for Neighborhood Progress, Inc. is announcing a year-end fundraising effort. The Soup Kitchen, Foodbank, Primary Health Care Clinic and Housing First Program, all operated by the Frederick Community Action Agency (FCAA), are in need of your help and financial support.

In continuous operation since 1984, the Frederick Soup Kitchen serves a hot evening meal, seven nights a week, every day of the year to as many as 110 hungry people a night. During fiscal year 2014, the Frederick Soup Kitchen served 25,770 nutritious meals through the efforts of a paid cook and over 250 dedicated volunteers. We need your financial support to continue to operate the soup kitchen – your donation will be used to pay the cook’s salary and to purchase necessary food items for the free evening meal.

The Frederick Foodbank, in operation since 1983, provides a 3- to 5-day supply of food to families and individuals who are facing an economic crisis and cannot afford to buy their groceries. Many of the families served through the Foodbank are very low-income and struggle every month to afford rent, utilities and the groceries for their families. The Frederick Foodbank is now serving 700 to 800 families each month. During fiscal year 2014, the Frederick Foodbank served 2,944 different families. In addition, over 1,000 families received turkeys and other food items for the Thanksgiving holiday. Your tax-deductible donation will be used to purchase food items and to help cover costs associated with operating a large foodbank facility.

During fiscal year 2014, the Primary Care Clinic treated 1,424 different patients for a total of 3,872 medical visits or encounters; the patients included adults and children that were homeless, low-income, and uninsured. The clinic is staffed by 2 nurse practitioners and a physician assistant that are employees of the FCAA and by 8 physicians that volunteer on-site at the FCAA clinic. Your donation will help to support the ongoing operation of the Primary Health Care Clinic and will help us to serve more patients that are uninsured and in need of medical care.

The Housing First Program literally provides permanent supportive housing to people who need it most – chronically homeless, disabled individuals that are literally living on the streets of Frederick. With funding from HUD and other sources, the FCAA has established or rented twenty-one (21) scattered-site apartment units that are now housing twenty-five (25) formerly homeless adults (some of the units are 2-bedroom apartments). Supportive services like case management, health care, and transportation are provided by FCAA staff members. Your donation will help the FCAA to pay for necessary program expenses like furnishings, household goods, and utilities.

Over the years, the Frederick Community Action Agency has relied on the financial support of the community to maintain and operate programs like the Soup Kitchen, Foodbank, Primary Care Clinic and the Housing First Program. At present, these programs are in need of monetary donations to support on-going program operations. The goal for this fundraiser is $100,000, which will support program operations through 2015. Any additional funds that are raised will be used to support the operation of other FCAA programs such as the Transitional Shelter for Homeless Families.
