Introduction to Zero Waste (one day training, on November 9th)

A generous sponsorship from a Frederick County citizen has made it possible to bring the Zero Waste USA “Introduction to Zero Waste” training to Frederick!

abbelissOn Wednesday, November 9th, from 9:00am to 4:00pm, this lively, interactive and highly informative workshop will be taught by two nationally renowned experts and Zero Waste advocates, Gary Liss and Ruth Abbe.

Participants will learn why Zero Waste is the fastest, most cost effective way communities can reduce climate change impacts, promote local sustainability and create green jobs.

We are very pleased with the number of people registering for this training, from Frederick and Carroll counties, as well as Montgomery, Howard, Baltimore, and PG counties! We’ll have state-level, municipal, and local officials attending, along with representatives from non-profit organizations, and interested citizens.

Zero Waste USA hopes you may be able to take advantage of this incredible workshop being conducted by Gary Liss, a nationally renown expert on Zero Waste.

The training is going to take place in Frederick, at the lovely new facility of The ARC at Market Street, which is located at 555 South Market Street. Lunch will be provided through the ARC’s on-site catering facilities.

Gary Liss

Gary Liss & Associates and U.S. Zero Waste Business Council, Loomis, CA

A leading advocate of Zero Waste, Mr. Liss has helped more communities develop Zero Waste plans than anyone else in the U.S. Mr. Liss is president of Gary Liss & Associates, vice-president of the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council and Board member of the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA). He is currently working with Underwriters Laboratories to develop a Zero Waste Standard for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Co-founder and past president of the National Recycling Coalition, he currently serves as Board member and Secretary. He is also a founder and Board member of Zero Waste USA and a member of the Zero Waste Brain Trust. A Certified Zero Emissions Research & Initiatives (ZERI) System Designer, in 2005 Mr. Liss went through extensive training with Gunter Pauli. He served on the Town Council in his hometown of Loomis, CA and was Mayor in 2010. He has a Master of Public Administration degree from Rutgers University and Bachelor in Civil Engineering from Tufts University

Ruth Abbe

Abbe & Associates LLC and SWANA Northern California Gold Rush Chapter, Alameda, CA

Ruth Abbe is a Zero Waste practitioner with more than 25 years of experience in recycling and composting program and facility development. As the principal of Abbe & Associates LLC, she works with municipalities across the U.S. to develop the social and physical infrastructure to achieve Zero Waste. She serves on the Board of Directors of the GrassRoots Recycling Network (Zero Waste USA), the Zero Waste International Alliance and the Gold Rush Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America. In her home city of Alameda, California she is a grassroots leader with Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda (CASA). CASA has developed an award-winning recycling and composting program for the Alameda schools (the Alameda Green Schools Challenge) and supports the “Miss Alameda Says, ‘Compost!’” program to help implement mandatory recycling and composting requirements at restaurants and multifamily buildings.
